Urological Oncology
Bladder Cancer
The commonest warning sign is painless blood in the urine. Most bladder cancers are found early and can be treated through the urethra without open surgery.
Overview
Bladder cancer is strongly linked to smoking. Diagnosis involves urine tests, imaging and cystoscopy (looking inside the bladder). Early, non-muscle-invasive cancers are typically removed via TURBT and may need medication instilled into the bladder; deeper cancers need more extensive treatment.
Common symptoms
- Painless visible blood in urine
- Persistent bladder irritation or frequency
- Recurrent infections
When to see a urologist
Any episode of visible blood in urine — even once — should be evaluated.
