Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
Non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate, common with age, that can slow or obstruct urine flow.
Overview
BPH is a benign increase in prostate size. As the gland grows it can squeeze the urethra, causing a weak stream, straining, incomplete emptying, frequency and nocturia. BPH is not cancer and does not turn into cancer.
Common symptoms
- Weak or slow urine stream
- Difficulty starting urination
- Feeling of incomplete emptying
- Frequency and night-time urination
When to see a urologist
Bothersome urinary symptoms, inability to pass urine (retention), recurrent infections or blood in the urine need urological review.
