Male Urology
Hematospermia (Blood in Semen)
Blood visible in the semen. It looks alarming but in younger men is usually benign and self-limiting.
Overview
Hematospermia most often results from fragile blood vessels in the prostate or seminal vesicles, infection, or recent procedures. In men over 40, or when persistent or recurrent, evaluation is recommended to exclude significant causes.
Common symptoms
- Red, brown or blood-streaked semen
- Occasionally with pelvic discomfort or urinary symptoms
When to see a urologist
Recurrent episodes, age over 40, or associated urinary symptoms, pain or fever justify a urology review.
