Hematuria (Blood in Urine)
Blood visible in the urine, or found on a urine test. It is a symptom — not a diagnosis — and always deserves evaluation.
Overview
Hematuria can arise from infection, stones, an enlarged prostate, kidney disease or, less commonly, cancers of the urinary tract. Even a single episode of visible blood in urine warrants assessment.
Common symptoms
- Pink, red or cola-coloured urine
- Blood detected only on urine testing (microscopic hematuria)
- May occur with or without pain
When to see a urologist
Any visible blood in the urine should be reported to a doctor. Painless visible hematuria in adults over 40 particularly needs urological evaluation.
