Kidney Cancer
Most kidney tumours are found incidentally on scans done for other reasons. Many small tumours can be treated with surgery that preserves the kidney.
Overview
The commonest kidney cancer is renal cell carcinoma. It often causes no symptoms until advanced, which is why incidental detection on ultrasound or CT is common. Treatment depends on tumour size, stage and overall health, and ranges from active surveillance to partial or complete kidney removal.
Common symptoms
- Often none — found on a scan
- Blood in the urine
- Flank pain or a lump (less common)

Visible blood in urine or a kidney mass reported on any scan needs prompt urological review.
