Prostate
Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS)
An umbrella term for storage symptoms (frequency, urgency, nocturia), voiding symptoms (weak stream, straining) and post-void symptoms (dribbling).
Overview
LUTS can arise from the prostate, the bladder, the urethra or from general medical conditions. Good care starts with identifying which part of the urinary tract is responsible rather than assuming the prostate is always to blame.
Common symptoms
- Storage: frequency, urgency, nocturia
- Voiding: hesitancy, weak stream, straining
- Post-void: dribbling, incomplete emptying
When to see a urologist
Persistent or bothersome LUTS, especially with blood in urine, pain or retention, should be assessed.
