Male Urology
Male Infertility
Difficulty contributing to conception after a year of trying. Male factors contribute to roughly half of couples' fertility problems.
Overview
Evaluation includes a history, examination and semen analysis, looking for causes such as varicocele, hormonal issues, previous surgery, infections or lifestyle factors. Many causes are treatable, and even severe problems may be helped with surgical sperm retrieval and assisted reproduction.
Common symptoms
- Usually no symptoms apart from difficulty conceiving
- Sometimes testicular discomfort, swelling or reduced sexual function
When to see a urologist
Couples who have not conceived after 12 months (or 6 months if the partner is over 35) should both be evaluated.
