Nocturia (Waking at Night to Urinate)
Waking from sleep one or more times to pass urine. Common with age but often improvable once the cause is found.
Overview
Nocturia may be caused by the bladder (small capacity, overactivity), the prostate in men, excess evening fluid intake, or the body producing more urine at night (as in diabetes, heart or sleep-related conditions).
Common symptoms
- Waking repeatedly at night to urinate
- Disturbed sleep and daytime tiredness
When to see a urologist
Nocturia that disrupts sleep, or appears with leg swelling, thirst, snoring or other urinary symptoms, is worth evaluating.
