Pediatric Urology
Pediatric Hydronephrosis
Swelling of a child's kidney seen on ultrasound, often detected before birth. Many mild cases resolve without intervention.
Overview
Antenatal or infant hydronephrosis is common. Most cases are mild and monitored with ultrasound. Significant or worsening swelling is investigated for causes such as PUJ obstruction or reflux, and surgery is reserved for cases where kidney drainage or function is threatened.
Common symptoms
- Usually none — detected on ultrasound
- Occasionally urinary infections or flank pain in older children
When to see a urologist
Follow the monitoring plan advised after detection; worsening swelling, infection or pain needs review.
