Posterior Urethral Valves

A congenital blockage in a boy's urethra that obstructs urine flow from the bladder, usually detected before or shortly after birth.

Overview

Posterior urethral valves are folds of tissue that block the urethra in baby boys. They are often suspected on pregnancy ultrasound. Early treatment — usually endoscopic valve ablation — and careful long-term follow-up of bladder and kidney function are essential.

Common symptoms

  • Poor urine stream in a male infant
  • Distended bladder or recurrent infections
  • Detected on antenatal or postnatal ultrasound

When to see a urologist
