Prostate Cancer

A common cancer in older men, often slow-growing. Early prostate cancer usually causes no symptoms and is often detected through PSA testing.

Overview

Prostate cancer ranges from slow-growing tumours that may only need monitoring to more aggressive cancers needing treatment. Decisions about PSA testing, biopsy and treatment are individualised based on age, health and patient preference.

Common symptoms

  • Usually none in early stages
  • Urinary symptoms are more often due to BPH than cancer
  • Bone pain or weight loss can occur in advanced disease

When to see a urologist

Men over 50 (or over 40–45 with a family history) may wish to discuss PSA testing with their doctor. A raised PSA or abnormal examination needs urological assessment.
