Prostate
Prostatitis
Inflammation or infection of the prostate causing pelvic pain and urinary symptoms. It can be acute (sudden) or chronic (persistent).
Overview
Acute bacterial prostatitis is a sudden infection with fever and pain needing prompt antibiotics. Chronic prostatitis / chronic pelvic pain syndrome causes longer-lasting pelvic or perineal pain, often without proven infection, and is managed with a combination of approaches.
Common symptoms
- Pain in the perineum, pelvis, lower back or genitals
- Painful or frequent urination
- Fever and chills in acute infection
- Painful ejaculation
When to see a urologist
Fever with pelvic pain and difficulty passing urine is urgent. Persistent pelvic pain also deserves structured evaluation.
