Kidney & Urinary Tract
Recurrent Urinary Tract Infection
Repeated bladder or urinary infections, usually defined as two or more infections in six months or three in a year.
Overview
Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common in women and also occur in men, children and people with urinary tract abnormalities. Evaluation looks for underlying causes such as stones, incomplete bladder emptying or, in men, prostate-related issues.
Common symptoms
- Burning or pain during urination
- Frequent, urgent urination
- Cloudy or strong-smelling urine
- Lower abdominal discomfort
When to see a urologist
Repeated infections, infections in men or children, fever with urinary symptoms, or blood in the urine should all be evaluated rather than repeatedly self-treated.
