Ureteric Stones
Stones that have moved from the kidney into the ureter — the tube carrying urine to the bladder — often causing colicky pain.
Overview
A ureteric stone is a kidney stone that has entered the ureter. Depending on its size and position it may pass spontaneously or block urine flow, causing the kidney to swell (hydronephrosis).
Common symptoms
- Sudden, severe colicky pain radiating to the groin
- Blood in the urine
- Frequent urge to urinate
- Nausea and restlessness
When to see a urologist
Fever with a blocked kidney is a medical emergency. Persistent pain, a stone that does not progress, or a single kidney also need prompt urological assessment.
