Urethra & Reconstructive Urology

Urethral Stricture

Narrowing of the urethra (urine passage) caused by scarring, leading to a weak stream and difficulty emptying the bladder.

Overview

Strictures can follow infection, injury, catheterisation or previous instrumentation, or occur without a clear cause. They tend to recur if only stretched, and longer or recurrent strictures are often best treated with reconstructive surgery (urethroplasty).

Common symptoms

  • Weak, slow or spraying urine stream
  • Straining to urinate
  • Feeling of incomplete emptying
  • Recurrent urinary infections

When to see a urologist

A progressively weakening stream, retention, or recurrent infections should prompt evaluation, usually with a flow test and imaging of the urethra.
