Urinary Urgency
A sudden, strong need to pass urine that is difficult to delay — a hallmark symptom of an overactive bladder.
Overview
Urgency occurs when the bladder muscle contracts at the wrong time or when the bladder lining is irritated. It is common and can usually be improved with bladder training, lifestyle measures and, where needed, medication.
Common symptoms
- Sudden compelling urge to urinate
- Occasional leakage before reaching the toilet
- Often paired with frequency and nocturia
When to see a urologist
New or worsening urgency, urgency with pain or blood, or urgency after surgery or radiation should be assessed.
