Vesicoureteral Reflux (VUR)

A condition in children where urine flows backwards from the bladder towards the kidneys, increasing the risk of kidney infections.

Overview

VUR is graded from mild to severe. Many mild cases resolve as a child grows; management may include observation, preventive antibiotics, or procedures for higher grades or breakthrough infections. The goal is protecting the kidneys.

Common symptoms

Recurrent urine infections with fever
Sometimes found during evaluation of antenatal hydronephrosis

When to see a urologist

Any febrile urinary infection in a young child should be properly evaluated, and known reflux needs structured follow-up.
