Urethral Reconstruction
DVIU (Direct Visual Internal Urethrotomy)
An endoscopic procedure where the scarred narrowing of the urethra is incised internally under vision.
01What is it?
DVIU cuts the stricture ring from inside using an endoscopic knife or laser, widening the passage.
02When is treatment considered?
Mainly for short (generally under ~1.5–2 cm), first-time strictures of the bulbar urethra. Success rates fall with longer or recurrent strictures.
03Available treatment options
Dilatation for very short segments, or urethroplasty for recurrent, long or complex strictures.
04What does the procedure involve?
Under anaesthesia, a scope is passed to the stricture and the scar is incised. A catheter is placed for days to allow healing.
05Expected recovery
Day-care or overnight stay. Return to routine activity in a few days after catheter removal.
06Common risks
Recurrence (significant, especially with longer strictures), bleeding, infection and, uncommonly, incontinence or erectile issues.
07When to seek medical attention
Retention, heavy bleeding or fever after the procedure need review.
