RIRS (Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery)

A minimally invasive procedure where a thin flexible scope is passed through the urinary passage to the kidney, and stones are dusted with a laser — no cuts required.

01What is it?

RIRS treats kidney stones using a flexible ureteroscope passed via the urethra and ureter into the kidney. A laser fibre breaks the stone into fine fragments or dust.

02When is treatment considered?

Considered for kidney stones that are unlikely to pass, causing symptoms or growing — typically stones of small to moderate size, or where ESWL is unsuitable.

03Available treatment options

Alternatives depending on stone size and position include ESWL (shock waves), PCNL (for larger stones), or observation for small asymptomatic stones.

04What does the procedure involve?

Under anaesthesia, the scope is advanced into the kidney and the stone is lasered. A temporary internal (DJ) stent is often placed and removed after days to weeks. No external incision is made.

05Expected recovery

Most patients go home the same or next day. Mild burning or blood in urine can occur briefly. Desk work is usually possible within a few days.

06Common risks

Common: temporary blood in urine, stent-related urgency or discomfort. Less common: infection, ureteric injury, or the need for a second session if fragments remain.

07When to seek medical attention

High fever, inability to pass urine, heavy bleeding or severe pain after the procedure need urgent contact with your care team.
